The first maps emerged at the same time as the first written words and symbols. They were used for orientation, visualizing information and storytelling. Nowadays maps for orientation have been widely replaced by digital navigation. The creative industry is discovering the potential of maps again and is designing detailed, personal city maps, which will make you want to actually travel to the places and satisfy your wanderlust.

In this bachelor’s thesis, Katharina Schwarz combines two of her passions: travelling the world and working with interesting graphics. It provides an overview of the history of cartography and it throughout reveals the diversity and beauty of maps – from old atlases to lovely illustrated city-maps. It also contains the theoretical principles and designing tools for creating three dimensional information. It therefore serves as an inspirational tool as well as offers design guidelines for creative minds.
