Models have always been essential visual tools to depict contemporary knowledge and narratives. Dioramas, as a special form of models, are now experiencing a revival in museums and exhibitions. This master’s thesis by Flora Kiraly therefore analyses the reason for their fascination.
The main foci are on the history of origin of dioramas in museums, new discourses and design solutions. The thesis also documents the work process in the creation of a diorama (Kahlenbergbahn, Verkehrsmuseum Remise, Vienna 2014). The task here was to complete a historical diorama background with models in the foreground. Classical diorama techniques have been combined with contemporary design solutions. Each phase is described step by step, to show the complexity and challenges that this field of exhibition-design offers.
